Kansas ‘Hero Dog’ Leads Officer to Fallen Owner, Saving His Life After Hours on the Floor

LEAWOOD, Kan. — A leashed dog with no human in sight helped Kansas police save its owner’s life after the man was left lying on the ground for hours, in need of medical attention — and dramatic body-camera footage of the rescue has gone viral, according to the Leawood Police Department.

The unusual incident began Sept. 17, when officers on patrol spotted the dog standing alone in the middle of a residential road, barking. One officer greeted the pup and suggested it go back home — but the dog refused, instead leading the officer about half a block back to its house.

“The officer followed the dog about half a block to its home,” the department explained in a Facebook post, “where he found the garage door open and the homeowner on the floor, unable to get up. The resident had been there for more than three hours.”

A second dog greeted the officer at the house. The officer called for medical help, and the homeowner is now recovering at home, the department said.

Video of the rescue has drawn wide attention on local and major news outlets, with viewers praising the dog’s loyalty and the officers’ quick thinking.

“Dogs are so smart and loyal,” one viewer commented on an ABC News post about the rescue. The department said that if not for the dogs — and the officers’ serendipitous timing — it is unclear how much longer the man might have waited for help.
