Xi Jinping at the White House: U.S. and China Must Develop AI “for Good”

WASHINGTON — Chinese President Xi Jinping, standing at a White House podium during his formal state visit, said the United States and China share a responsibility to steer artificial intelligence toward the public good, declaring that “both China and the United States are leading nations in artificial intelligence.”

The remarks came during a ceremony in which Xi and President Donald Trump delivered remarks marking the first formal state visit by a Chinese leader to the United States in years. According to the English interpreter rendering Xi’s Mandarin remarks, Xi said: “We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good,” and called on both countries to “ensure that the development of AI is always under human control and serves the well-being of the people.”

“We should cooperate with sincerity,” Xi said, arguing that “the interests of China and the United States are deeply intertwined” and that “without our cooperation, it would be hard to solve many of the world’s problems.” He also welcomed American companies investing in China and said he hoped “Chinese companies are treated fairly here in the United States.”

Trump, speaking earlier in the ceremony, said the two leaders would “discuss pressing issues concerning security, technology, and super intelligence, SI,” adding that “the decisions we make in these areas today can promote peace and prosperity for decades and decades to come.” His reference to “super intelligence” echoed his recent remarks on advanced AI, featured in Zark News’ earlier clip on Trump’s AI policy push.

The visit included ceremonial honors, a planned trip to the National Archives to view the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, and Xi’s announcement of invitations for 100,000 young Americans to visit China for exchanges and study over the next five years.
