WASHINGTON — Oct. 6, 2026 — President Donald Trump has approved an Army firing-squad execution for Nidal Malik Hasan, the former Army psychiatrist convicted over the 2009 Fort Hood shooting, according to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell.
Parnell announced the approval Monday night following a recommendation from Pete Hegseth. Reuters and AP reported the announcement. The Army secretary is to determine the execution’s time and place.
Approval does not mean an execution has occurred
Hasan was convicted and sentenced to death in 2013. A U.S. Army legal publication records 13 murders and 32 attempted murders in the Fort Hood attack.
The same publication explains that presidential approval starts further administrative steps and that a prisoner can seek federal habeas review and a stay of execution. The military has not carried out a death sentence since 1961.
