Sand flipped Iowa’s open governor’s seat to the Democrats — the first Democrat elected to the job since 2006.
Rob Sand, 44, built his brand as the state government’s watchdog. A lawyer and former assistant attorney general, he was elected Iowa state auditor in 2018 — and in 2022 he was the only Democrat to win statewide office in Iowa, which made him his party’s lone foothold in the statehouse.
As auditor he picked fights with both parties over spending and transparency, and he campaigned for governor on the same pitch: a straight-talking referee rather than a partisan. Iowa voters, who have backed Republicans for a decade, bought it.
His win is the clearest sign yet that Iowa is not out of reach for Democrats. Watch how he governs with a Republican legislature — and whether his auditor’s eye survives the move to the other side of the budget.
