WASHINGTON — NASA has released a video progress report on the first six months of its Moon Base initiative, the agency’s plan to establish a permanent human outpost on the lunar surface, beginning near the Moon’s south pole.
“This is the moment where we should all start believing again,” the narration opens. “Now bound for the Moon. America is returning to the Moon to build a Moon Base.”
The update highlights the commercial partnerships driving the effort. “NASA has selected Blue Origin, Astrolab, Lunar Outpost,” the video says, adding: “Congratulations to Astrobotic, Firefly, Intuitive Machines. Great progress.” The agency describes early milestones in landers, rovers, and surface systems as moon base hardware moves toward delivery: “Being able to see Moon Base elements getting to the finish line is just awesome.”
Phase one, the video explains, is about access and experimentation: “Phase One is all about getting to the Moon reliably. We’re going to experiment with new technologies, and we’re going to actually start the infrastructure in this phase that goes from now to 2028. We want to learn, we want to experiment, and we’re going to build on the knowledge.”
The end goal is a sustained human presence. “American astronauts will return to the lunar surface,” the narration states, closing with the initiative’s mantra: “For America, no aim is too high, no journey is too far. No challenge is too tough. We will launch our robotic landers, our rovers, and begin establishing that enduring presence on the lunar surface, the Moon Base, because this time, we are going back to stay.”
