Israel Kills Senior Hamas Commander Izz al-Din Al-Beik in Gaza Airstrike

GAZA CITY — Israel killed senior Hamas commander Izz al-Din Al-Beik in a dawn airstrike on Gaza City’s Nasr neighbourhood on Tuesday, Reuters reported. The strike hit in the early hours of the morning in the Gaza City district, targeting the senior Hamas figure.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed that Al-Beik was killed in the strike, according to Reuters. The confirmation from Israel’s top leadership underscored the significance the government attached to the operation.

Hamas also confirmed the death of the senior commander, Reuters reported. The group’s acknowledgement of Al-Beik’s killing confirmed the outcome of the dawn raid on the Nasr neighbourhood.

At least three people were killed in Gaza on Tuesday, Gaza health officials said. The officials’ tally covers deaths recorded during the day’s strikes across the territory. Israel says 20 Hamas figures have been killed so far this month, according to Reuters.

The killing comes as negotiations over a ceasefire and the disarmament of Hamas remain deadlocked, Reuters reported. The talks have shown no sign of progress, with neither side announcing any movement toward an agreement.

The dawn strike on the Nasr neighbourhood was among the latest in a series of Israeli operations targeting Hamas figures this month, according to the Israeli account reported by Reuters. The campaign against the group’s leadership has continued even as diplomatic efforts to end the fighting remain stalled. The strike was confirmed by both Israeli officials and Hamas, an unusual alignment that left little doubt about the outcome of the dawn raid.
