Apple is rolling out watchOS 27 with new health-tracking features while preparing a redesigned Health app that will use Apple Intelligence to organize and explain personal wellness data.

The software update is available beginning Monday for supported Apple Watch models, according to Apple’s product announcement. Some of the broader Health app features are planned for later this year and will require devices that support Apple Intelligence.

The company’s new Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4 introduce a “readiness” score that combines recent activity, sleep and vital-sign data into a daily rating from zero to 10. The feature can recommend that a user recover, pace themselves or proceed normally, and it can change as new data arrives during the day.

More frequent measurements

Apple says its updated sensing system can record heart rate every five seconds throughout the day on the newest watches. Heart-rate variability can be measured as often as every five minutes, allowing the Vitals app to compare recent readings with a user’s personal baseline.

Those performance and accuracy statements come from Apple. The company says a study of more than 1,000 participants compared the new system with other commercially available wearables. Independent clinical evaluation will remain important, especially because Apple notes that the Vitals app is intended for wellness rather than medical diagnosis.

AI moves deeper into the Health app

The redesigned Health app will add an Insights tab summarizing heart, sleep, fitness, readiness and other data. A planned Longevity section will examine longer-term patterns and include a “Health Age” estimate informed by measurements such as resting heart rate, sleep, heart-rate variability and estimated aerobic fitness.

Apple also plans camera-assisted movement evaluations for flexibility, strength, balance and movement mechanics. The company says those evaluations will run on the device and that video will not be recorded, stored or shared.

Other additions include perimenopause and menopause support in Cycle Tracking, personalized educational material and the ability in the United States to schedule certain laboratory tests through the Health app. Apple says availability will vary by device, language, region and local regulation.

Why it matters

Consumer devices are increasingly moving from simple activity counts toward continuous interpretation of health data. That may make trends easier to understand, but it also raises questions about accuracy, privacy, overreliance and the boundary between wellness guidance and medical advice.

Apple says its on-device processing and Private Cloud Compute system are designed to limit exposure of personal data. Users should still review device settings and treat wellness alerts as prompts for informed discussion—not as substitutes for professional medical evaluation.

Availability

Apple says watchOS 27 supports Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch SE 3 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, paired with a compatible iPhone. The redesigned Health app will begin in U.S. English later this year, with some features restricted to newer devices.
