Asked at a City Hall media availability whether he had called Abdul El-Sayed after his Michigan Senate win, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he had not spoken to him yet, though the two had spoken in the past. “His election is one that means so much to so many,” Mamdani said, pointing to the extraordinary amount of money spent to oppose El-Sayed and the racism and slander he was met with during the campaign. He ended by quoting El-Sayed: “As he said last night, that the good guys won.”
El-Sayed beat Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan. The Associated Press called the race at 2:27 a.m. ET on Nov 4, and El-Sayed is the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.
