Watch: ‘We Have Asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to Resign,’ White House Confirms at Briefing

In her first briefing as White House press secretary on Tuesday, Katie Zacharia confirmed that President Donald Trump has asked Kimberly Guilfoyle to resign as U.S. ambassador to Greece.

Asked by a Daily Mail reporter for a timeline — and who might replace Guilfoyle — Zacharia answered: “We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign. She has been a wonderful asset to the team, and we wish her well.”

The confirmation came a day after Trump told reporters on the South Lawn that he was considering firing Guilfoyle, saying the administration was “not happy” following reports about her conduct in Athens. Guilfoyle has said she will step down; in a statement she called the allegations against her false and said she intends to defend her name and reputation.

Guilfoyle, a former Fox News host, faces allegations — reported by the Wall Street Journal and the Daily Mail — that she pressured a donor over a $100,000 credit card bill, solicited perks from Greek businessmen, and used her post to promote energy deals. She and the company involved have denied wrongdoing.
