Russia fired 36 ballistic missiles at Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight on November 6 and 7 and launched 172 drones across 13 regions of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, according to Ukrainian officials and the Associated Press. Ukrainian air defences shot down only four of the ballistic missiles, a gap Zelenskyy linked to a shortage of Patriot interceptors. Nine people were wounded, including a child. The strikes damaged power lines from the Rivne and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plants, causing blackouts in five regions, and Kyiv’s Northern Bridge was hit and closed. Russia’s Defence Ministry said it struck military, industrial and transport sites, a claim Ukraine has not accepted.
The barrage came one day after President Zelenskyy warned that Russia was preparing to strike energy sites, bridges over the Dnipro River and other civilian infrastructure, and it followed a large attack on November 3, when Ukraine says Russia launched 289 drones and dozens of missiles. Ukrainian leaders have warned for weeks that Russia would again target the power system as colder weather raised demand for heat and electricity. Preliminary Ukrainian findings said North Korean made KN-23 missiles hit a key energy facility, a finding officials presented as preliminary, not as a final conclusion about the weapons used.
