One person was killed and six others were hurt in a shooting inside a Spirit Halloween store in Fairfield, California, on Friday night.

Police said the shots were fired at about 8:30 p.m. inside the seasonal store at the Solano Town Center mall, which was busy with last-minute Halloween shoppers. Officers found seven people with gunshot wounds. One person died at the scene. Six were taken to hospitals, and three are in critical condition.

The shooter left before police arrived and is still at large. Police have not released a description of the suspect. They have not said whether one person or more fired the shots, and they have not given a motive.

“This is still a very active crime scene,” Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall said. “Detectives are speaking with witnesses and diligently working to identify the suspect responsible for this horrific shooting.”

Marshall said the shooting appeared to be limited to the Spirit Halloween store. Officers searched the rest of the mall, including a movie theater where about a dozen people were watching a film. One shopper’s husband told KCRA that his wife was near the store’s wig section when the shots started and escaped through an emergency exit.

The FBI’s Sacramento office said it is deploying its Evidence Response Team to help Fairfield police. Officers from Suisun City and the California Highway Patrol also helped at the scene.

Police have not released the names or ages of the victims. They are asking anyone with information or video to call the Fairfield Police Department at 707-428-7600 or email 1030mall@fairfield.ca.gov.
