Taiwan Rejects Xi’s Remarks to Trump as ‘Distortion of Facts’

TAIPEI — Taiwan’s government on Friday denounced Chinese President Xi Jinping’s comments on the island’s future during his Washington meeting with President Donald Trump as a “distortion of the facts,” insisting only the Taiwanese people can decide their future.

Xi told Trump on Thursday that China’s position on safeguarding national “reunification” and territorial integrity is clear, and said he hoped the U.S. would adhere to the “correct position” of opposing Taiwan independence.

“Taiwan’s sovereignty belongs to all the people of Taiwan. The Chinese Communist Party has no right to represent the Taiwanese people, and Taiwan’s future can only be determined by the Taiwanese people through democratic means,” Taiwan’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

The ministry called China the “true disruptor” of regional peace, citing military threats around the island and in the East and South China Seas. It said Taiwan would continue working with the U.S. and like-minded partners to safeguard peace in the Taiwan Strait.

The exchange followed the closely watched Trump–Xi summit in Washington, where the two leaders extended a trade truce and discussed Taiwan, AI and other flashpoints.
