Rubio: U.S. Does Not Want Pakistan Targeted for Terrorism

ATLANTA — Asked about the fighting between Pakistan and Afghanistan, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States does not want Pakistan to be targeted by terrorism, and that Washington would play a productive role if it can.

A reporter noted that Pakistan and the government in Afghanistan are at war, that Russia has stepped in to mediate, and asked how Rubio sees the tensions in the region. Rubio said Pakistan is concerned about terrorist attacks sponsored from Afghan territory, and feels the Taliban has not done enough to stop them.

“We obviously don’t want them to be targeted for terrorism,” Rubio said. “So if there’s a productive role for us to play, we would play it.” He added that the U.S. has heard the concerns Pakistan has raised and has seen some of the attacks it points to. “We’re against terrorism, no matter where it emanates from and who it targets.”
