Heavy rain and strong winds are hitting Japan’s Ishigaki Island as Typhoon Champi approaches. The storm — at one point a super typhoon and one of the strongest in the Pacific this year, still packing gusts above 227 kph (141 mph) — is expected to pass northeastern Taiwan, turn north toward the Chinese coast and move into southern Japan.
