Russian Drone Strike Kills Six, Including Three Children, in Kharkiv Region Park

KYIV — A Russian drone attack on Monday killed six people, including three children, in a park in a village in Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv region, according to Reuters, citing Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov.

Syniehubov, writing on Telegram, said 15 people were injured in the strike southwest of the city of Kharkiv. Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi said the drone hit a park where families were playing with children, in the settlement of Nova Vodolaha, and shared a blurred photograph showing a child’s body in a stroller. Other pictures posted online showed emergency crews working around a damaged building, and Ukrainian reports said a cafe near the park was also damaged.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said one victim was a girl just over a year old, killed in her stroller, whose mother died in hospital, and that another girl killed was 11 years old, according to Ukrainian reporting of his statement. Ukrainian investigators said, on preliminary findings, that a Geran-3 drone was used, and the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office said it had opened a pre-trial investigation into a war crime resulting in deaths. Those investigative findings are Ukrainian authorities’ account and have not been independently adjudicated.

The strike came as the United Nations warned that civilian casualties in Ukraine have risen sharply. The New York Post, citing a U.N. report, said civilian deaths and injuries surged 85 percent in September from a year earlier, and that in Kyiv alone civilians were killed or injured on 22 of September’s 30 days — the highest frequency recorded in any month since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Zark News has not independently verified the full U.N. figures in this report.

The attack also came against a tense diplomatic backdrop. Reporting on Monday described Russia launching ballistic missiles toward Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight, and a U.S. decision to waive major provisions of new sanctions legislation shortly before they were due to take effect — a move the administration has described as preserving room for negotiations. Zelenskyy has repeatedly argued that Ukraine needs more air defence to protect civilians from drone and missile attacks.

Why it matters: a strike on a village park in the middle of the afternoon, with families present, underlines how front-line-adjacent communities in the Kharkiv region remain exposed even far from active ground fighting. Kharkiv region, which borders Russia, has faced repeated drone, missile and glide-bomb attacks throughout the war.

What happens next: Ukrainian emergency services were still working at the scene on Monday, medics were transporting the injured to hospitals in Kharkiv, and officials said casualty figures could be updated. Russia has not commented on this specific strike in the reporting cited here. Read the original Reuters report here.
