WASHINGTON, October 19, 2026 — A National Guard member was shot in the leg late Sunday while responding to a street fight in Washington’s Eastern Market neighborhood, and the suspected gunman was wounded when Guard members returned fire, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The confrontation occurred at about 11:10 p.m. on the 400 block of Eighth Street SE. Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said seven or eight Guard members were sitting in a parked van and watching a fight unfold on a sidewalk. When they stepped out to intervene, they heard gunfire, Carroll told reporters.

What police say happened

Carroll said a person involved in the fight drew a firearm and began shooting. The person then ran into an alley. Guard members ordered the person to drop the weapon, and police say the person pointed it toward the troops.

Three Guard members fired their weapons, Carroll said. One Guard member was hit in the leg; the suspected gunman was struck in the abdomen. Both were taken to hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Police said the suspect was arrested.

The accounts released so far are based on statements by police. Investigators have not publicly released a full reconstruction of the encounter or findings about each shot fired. No conclusion about criminal responsibility beyond the reported arrest should be drawn before the investigation is complete.

Investigation and community safety

The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the shooting. Carroll said authorities did not believe there was a continuing threat to the neighborhood and asked people with information to contact police.

The shooting occurred in Eastern Market, a residential and commercial area near Capitol Hill. The incident is significant both because a service member was injured and because Guard personnel discharged their weapons during a confrontation in a busy civilian neighborhood. The investigation will need to establish the sequence of events and review available evidence, including any recordings and witness statements.

Why National Guard troops are in Washington

President Donald Trump began deploying National Guard personnel to Washington in August 2025 as part of a crime-fighting initiative. The deployment has since prompted debate about public safety and the role of military personnel in city streets.

The Trump administration argues the deployment has helped reduce crime. Critics, including local residents and officials, have questioned its necessity and raised concerns about the normalization of a military presence in civilian neighborhoods. Those competing assessments are separate from the facts investigators must establish about Sunday’s shooting.

What happens next

Police have not yet announced the suspect’s identity or charges in the accounts reviewed for this report. Further updates may clarify the injuries, the investigative findings and whether any charges will be filed. Zark News will update the article when verified information becomes available.
