At least 34 children and one teacher were killed when the roof of a school collapsed during morning classes in Peshawar on Thursday, according to hospital and rescue officials. More than 50 children were injured, and Lady Reading Hospital said it received 53 patients as rescue teams pulled survivors from the rubble.
The collapse happened at the Al-Khair Education Centre in Dir Colony, where about 110 students were studying in three classrooms when the upper floor gave way. Rescue workers concluded their operation around midday after accounting for the students and staff.
Police have arrested the school’s owner and its principal as investigators examine the condition of the building and whether it met safety requirements. The disaster has renewed scrutiny of school building safety across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
