NEW YORK — A federal immigration agent shot a man in the neck Thursday afternoon during an enforcement operation in the Marble Hill section of the Bronx, setting off a night of protests outside the hospital where the wounded man was taken, according to police and federal officials.
The Department of Homeland Security said Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were attempting to arrest a wanted man from the Dominican Republic around 4 p.m. when the shooting occurred. The man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and a 5-year-old child who was in his vehicle was unharmed, officials said. DHS did not detail what provoked the gunfire.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said seven rounds were fired by at least one ICE agent. She said the NYPD had no involvement in the shooting, and that department Argus cameras captured the lead-up to the confrontation but not the shooting itself. The car had a bullet entry point on the front windshield and an exit point in a rear window, Tisch said, and the man was struck in the neck below his left ear. Officers gave him aid and transported him to NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital in stable condition.
By Thursday night, about 300 demonstrators had gathered outside the hospital. Shoving matches broke out with NYPD officers over barricades, and some demonstrators were handcuffed, according to reports and video footage from the scene.
At a late-night news conference, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he had spent roughly two hours on the phone with President Trump, pressing him to release the wounded man — a request he said was denied — and to suspend ICE operations in New York. Mamdani accused ICE of operating “with impunity,” and said ICE had removed the man from the hospital in an unmarked vehicle around 11:20 p.m., before the news conference.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said she also spoke with Trump and with Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, urging a halt to ICE enforcement operations in New York and asking that body camera footage of the shooting be released publicly.
