Russian Drone Strikes Across Ukraine Kill at Least 10, Wound More Than 80

KYIV — Russian drone strikes across Ukraine on Monday killed at least 10 people and wounded more than 80, according to Reuters and Ukrainian officials, in one of the heaviest single-day attacks in months.

In Kyiv, two people were killed when a drone struck the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, emergency officials said. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said 24 people were injured in attacks across the capital, including six who were treated in hospital.

In Dnipro, a drone hit a business center during working hours, killing three people and injuring 19. Another person was killed at a logistics office in Synelnykove, while an infrastructure strike in Zaporizhzhia injured 32, emergency officials said. The nationwide total also included casualties reported in other regions.

Ukraine said Russia used faster, high-flying jet-powered drones that are harder for ground defenses to intercept. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukrainian forces were testing new interceptor systems.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the attacks as retaliation for Ukrainian strikes on Moscow and Russian oil facilities. Russia’s claims about its intended targets could not be independently verified.

The barrage followed a week of United Nations diplomacy aimed at advancing negotiations, while Moscow signaled little expectation of a quick settlement.

Correction and update, Sept. 29, 2026: An earlier version used preliminary figures of seven dead and more than 50 injured. This report has been updated after Reuters published a nationwide toll of at least 10 dead and more than 80 injured.
