Mark Warner beat Republican Bert Mizusawa to win a fourth term in the Senate, in the first Senate race the AP called on election night.

Mark Warner is Virginia’s senior senator and one of the Senate’s best-known voices on national security. He is the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Warner made his fortune in the cellphone business before he entered politics. He helped build companies in the early days of mobile phones, and that business career made him one of the wealthier members of the Senate.

He was governor of Virginia from 2002 to 2006. Voters first sent him to the Senate in 2008, and he took office in 2009. He has held the seat ever since, working on technology, business and intelligence issues.

On Tuesday, Warner defeated Bert Mizusawa, a retired Army major general. The Associated Press called the race at 7:00 p.m. ET, as Virginia’s polls closed — the first Senate call of the night.

His win matters because Virginia is a state both parties watch closely, and Warner’s seat stays in Democratic hands. Watch his work on the Intelligence Committee, where he helps lead oversight of the nation’s spy agencies.
