PENSACOLA, Fla. — A Pensacola police officer raced into a burning house Friday evening and pulled a trapped man to safety, acting after emergency response had been suspended across the city because of dangerously high winds from Hurricane Isaias.

The officer answered a call about the house fire on Peacock Drive in the Scenic Hills neighborhood, where a man was trapped inside, according to Pensacola News Journal. Emergency response had been suspended at 6 p.m. as Isaias lashed the Gulf Coast, but the officer went in anyway and brought the man out.

Both the officer and the rescued man suffered smoke-inhalation injuries, city spokeswoman Dominique Epps said. The Pensacola Fire Department also responded to the fire despite the suspension, but crews lost hydrant water pressure because of the storm, and conditions eventually deteriorated so badly that firefighters were ordered to abandon their firehouses and ride out the storm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the News Journal reported. No further details on the conditions of the officer or the rescued man were immediately available.

Hurricane Isaias made landfall along the northern Gulf Coast on Friday evening, the first U.S. hurricane landfall since 2024, leaving parts of Florida, Alabama and Mississippi battered by wind, surge and torrential rain.
